Definition

What is a flatbed truck?

A standard flatbed truck has an open loading platform with direct access to the freight. In most common configurations, the useful loading length is around 13.60 metres, although specific exceptions and special equipment do exist.

In France, some loads may legally extend beyond the trailer, allowing an overall loaded length of up to 16.50 metres and a width of up to 2.55 metres (instead of the usual 2.40 metres on many standard platforms). The total gross vehicle weight can generally go up to 44 tonnes. Beyond these dimensions or weights, the shipment falls under exceptional transport.

Flatbed transport also requires particular care during loading. Because the freight is not enclosed by a body, the packaging, weight distribution and securing of the load must be carefully controlled. Poorly prepared or insufficiently secured cargo can shift, fall from the vehicle or affect its stability, with potentially very serious consequences for the goods, the vehicle and other road users.

Loading & unloading

How is the vehicle operated?

Goods can be loaded from the side or above using a forklift, crane or overhead crane. Correct securing and any necessary weather protection must be planned in advance.

Frequently asked questions

When should a flatbed be used?+

A flatbed is useful when goods need side or top loading, or when their shape or dimensions make an enclosed body impractical.

Are goods protected from rain on a flatbed?+

A standard flatbed is open. Additional protection can be arranged where appropriate, but this must be specified before transport is organised.
