Curtainsider / Tautliner being loaded

Definition

What is a curtainsider / tautliner?

A curtainsider truck, often referred to as a Tautliner when configured as a sliding-curtain semi-trailer, is one of the most versatile road-freight vehicles. Its side curtains can be opened along most of the vehicle length, protecting the goods in transit while providing direct access for loading and unloading.

This configuration is particularly useful for bulky, long or difficult-to-handle freight that cannot easily be loaded through rear doors alone. A standard curtainsider semi-trailer can offer an internal loading length of around 13.6 metres, making it possible, depending on vehicle specification, weight, load securing and regulatory constraints, to carry goods approaching 13 metres in length.

Loading & unloading

How is the vehicle operated?

A major advantage of a curtainsider is loading flexibility. The side curtains can be opened so a forklift can load or unload directly from ground level, which is especially useful at customer sites without a loading dock. Vehicles fitted with a sliding or opening roof can also be loaded vertically by crane or overhead gantry. Curtainsided bodies are available in a wide range of sizes, from light vehicles around the 20 m³ class through rigid trucks to full semi-trailers, allowing the vehicle to be matched to the volume, weight and access constraints of each job.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a curtainsider and a box truck?+

A curtainsider uses sliding side curtains and, depending on specification, may also have a sliding roof. This provides much wider access to the load. A box truck has rigid enclosed sides and is normally loaded through the rear doors.

Can a curtainsider be loaded without a loading dock?+

Yes. Opening the side curtains allows a forklift to access the freight directly from ground level, making loading and unloading much easier at sites without a dock.

Can a Tautliner be loaded through the roof?+

Yes, when it is fitted with a sliding or opening roof. This allows vertical loading or unloading by crane or overhead gantry, which is particularly useful for long, heavy or bulky freight.

Are curtainsider vehicles available in different sizes?+

Yes. Curtainsided bodies are available on several vehicle formats, from light vehicles around the 20 m³ class through rigid trucks to full Tautliner semi-trailers. The correct choice depends on volume, weight, cargo length and site access constraints.
